Twitter stats

Twittercounter.com is a website that tracks Twitter accounts and everything about them- how many tweets they post a day on average, how many followers they get daily, the amount of people who viewed their account in the last month, and much much more. These statistics interested me, so I decided to look further into things, and track artists' followers before and after the Grammys. I noticed significant changes in the amount of followers of this years grammy performers, such as Eminem and Lady Gaga.
Eminem, for example, had an increasing following of about 12,411 people a day. The day after his Grammy performance, however, he had almost triple that as he reached almost 33,000 followers. Similarly, Lady Gaga went from a daily average increase of 16,533 followers a day to over 32,000 the day after the Grammys. Do you think it was their performances that made people who are usually not big Eminem or Lady Gaga fans feel like following them? Would it have been just as much of an increased following if her performance wasn't as good? Do you think this was a coincidence or do you agree with my assumption that this sudden spike of daily followers was a direct effect of the Grammys and their spectacular performances?
Additionally, in the case of Lady Gaga, do her eccentric costumes intrigue people and ultimately interest them in following her tweets? Here, for example, is what she looked like in her 2011 Grammy performance:

  1. Soph,
It does not surprise me at all that moth of these celebrities would gain so many followers after their performances at the Grammys. I definitely agree with your assumption that the sudden increase of followers was a direct effect of the fact that these singers performed at the Grammys. However, I have similar questions to yours. I wonder if the increase had anything to do with the performances themselves, or just the fact that these stars were gaining so much publicity from having performed. I wonder if all of their new followers even watched their performances! Furthermore, I think that Lady Gaga's eccentric outfits and performances definitely help her gather a large Twitter following. When someone dresses so lavishly and performs so extravagantly as well, people are going to be curious what she has to say when she's not visually in the public's eye. That is, when she is riding around on her tour bus, tweeting about things that are on her mind. This website seems really interesting, and I'm definitely going to use it to look into other statistics involving celebrity followings! Thanks Soph!

  2. As a new follower of Lady Gaga, I will use my own experience to try to answer these questions! Lady Gaga has gained popularity and it is because she performed at the Grammy's that is the most important. The quality of the performance is necessary for people to enjoy listening to her songs, but as for Twitter I do not think that the actual performance itself led to the rise of her tweets. All this talk about her outfits and her newest songs are what make people want to learn more about her whether they enjoy her music or not. Therefore Sophie to answer your question, I think that it was the fact that they both performed that increased their level of followers and I do not think that the quality of the performance matters as much when it comes to Twitter. This goes for other celebrities as well. When there is a scandal, people want to use Twitter to follow the person that is involved with the scandal so that they can become more aware about the events within the social media world. These scandals, although they make the celebrity seem unattractive as a person, I would bet that there would still be a rise in their followers. What this all comes down to is the fact that people use Twitter for information and when attention in the social media world is drawn to one specific person, it is likely that people will follow them no matter what. Therefore, twittercounter.com is definitely going to be of interest to many people!

  3. Sophie,
Cool post! I think there are many reasons why a website like Twitter Counter would become so popular. First, people use Twitter as a means to communicate with people, especially people they ordinarily would not be able to chat with. Popular celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Eminem receive hundreds of Tweets daily, from people who are hoping to get some kind of acknowledgment back. What makes Twitter Counter such a useful tool, is that it will let people know which of the celebrities they admire are most likely to give them a response. I know from personal experience, that you feel pretty awesome when your favorite star athlete says "thanks," after you Tweet that he had such a great game. Secondly, I think both Lady Gaga and Eminem gained many of their followers because of their grammy performances. The reason being, that many people watch the Grammys who may necessarily be fans of Lady Gaga and Eminem. However, after watching them perform (possibly in outlandish outfits) they may be interested in finding out more about them...and Twitter is a great way to do that!
